Mission Possible walking programme
Take the first step towards a healthier you…
Are you looking to become more active and healthier?
Welcome to Mission Possible, our walking and fitness programme that aims to help cancer survivors to become more active. By taking part in this challenge, we want to help you become more body-confident and improve your fitness and motivation! Whether you have been exercising for a while or are about to take your first steps back into exercise, this programme will help you to confidently set and reach your own personal goals.
What does it involve?
Mission Possible is a nine-month programme starting in November 2024 that will include a monthly walking challenge that allows you choose how far you want to go. There will be a dedicated Facebook group that will provide goal-setting sessions, support, Q&A opportunities and a community of like-minded people. There will also be a weekly ‘WalkFit’ exercise session on Facebook with our fitness guru Chelle, which you can either take part in live or catch up with in your own time. You do not have to commit to the whole nine months – you can dip in and out as you choose.
Most of the Mission Remission team will be taking part, hoping to improve our fitness and resilience – we’d love you to join us!
What are the walking challenges?
Each month you can choose the distance that you want to walk. The options are:
- 13 miles – the length of a half marathon.
- 26 miles – the length of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru.
- 50 miles – the length of the Six Peaks Trail from Settle, North Yorkshire to Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria.
- 73 miles – the length of Hadrian’s Wall which stretches from coast to coast in northern England and was built by the Romans to guard the north-west frontier.
- 100 miles – the length of the South Downs Way from Winchester, Hampshire to Eastbourne, East Sussex.
- 150 miles – the length of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, a spectacular route that takes in some of the best ocean views in southern Australia.
- 211 miles – the length of the John Muir Trail in California, USA which is said to be one of the best hikes in the world and goes from the Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney.
Why should I join in?
There’s heaps of compelling evidence that suggests exercise is particularly important for cancer survivors – it can prevent cancer from ever coming back. And according to the University of Cambridge, "just 11 minutes of brisk walking a day can help to reduce the risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases and cancer."
There is also evidence that walking increases your blood flow, helping oxygen and nutrients move around your body, making you feel more alert and refreshed. It can also release natural chemicals that make you feel happy and positive like serotonin, dopamine and endorphins.
If that doesn’t convince you, here is some feedback from previous fitness challenges that Chelle has run:
Is it free?
Yes, Mission Possible is completely free! However there will be an opportunity, if you wish, for you to set up a Facebook or Just Giving fundraiser for your walking challenge to help us continue to run the programme and to give something back.
You can find more information on how to do this here: https://www.mission-remission.com/set-up-fundraiser
You can also join us and become a Mission Remission member! For £5 a month, we will send you out a Mission Remission bracelet. Then, when you walk a new challenge, we’ll send you out a bead to add to your bracelet – each bead will represent your commitment to a walking challenge and by the end you will have a powerful visual reminder of how far you have come, physically and mentally.
To become a member, just sign up via the Just Giving monthly donation page here.
And you can find our Facebook group here.
Who is Chelle?
Chelle has been a personal trainer for ten years. She is often referred to by GPs for exercise and has a lot of experience working with cancer survivors. As she is also a breast cancer survivor, people have warmed to her and feel that she can understand the barriers faced when exercising post-cancer treatment. She has been working with Mission Remission for a year now, leading on our Mission Fitness programme and community fundraising.
