Take the first step towards a healthier you…

Are you looking to become more active and healthier?

We’re currently seeking funding for a new walking and fitness programme that aims to help cancer survivors to become more active. We want to help you become more body-confident and improve your fitness and motivation! Whether you have been exercising for a while or are about to take your first steps back into exercise, this programme will help you to confidently set and reach your own personal goals.

What will it involve?

You’ll take part in a monthly walking challenge that allows you to choose how far you want to go. With a dedicated Facebook group that will provide goal-setting sessions, support, Q&A opportunities and a community of like-minded people. And a weekly ‘WalkFit’ exercise session on Facebook with our fitness guru Chelle – you can either take part in live or catch up with in your own time.

What are the walking challenges?

Each month you can choose the distance that you want to walk. The options are:

  • 13 miles – the length of a half marathon.
  • 26 miles – the length of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru.
  • 50 miles – the length of the Six Peaks Trail from Settle, North Yorkshire to Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria.
  • 73 miles – the length of Hadrian’s Wall which stretches from coast to coast in northern England and was built by the Romans to guard the north-west frontier.
  • 100 miles – the length of the South Downs Way from Winchester, Hampshire to Eastbourne, East Sussex.
  • 150 miles – the length of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, a spectacular route that takes in some of the best ocean views in southern Australia.
  • 211 miles – the length of the John Muir Trail in California, USA which is said to be one of the best hikes in the world and goes from the Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney.

Why should I join?

There’s heaps of compelling evidence that suggests exercise is particularly important for cancer survivors – it can prevent cancer from ever coming back. And according to the University of Cambridge, “just 11 minutes of brisk walking a day can help to reduce the risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases and cancer.”

There is also evidence that walking increases your blood flow, helping oxygen and nutrients move around your body, making you feel more alert and refreshed. It can also release natural chemicals that make you feel happy and positive like serotonin, dopamine and endorphins.

If that doesn’t convince you, head over to our social media pages to find tips, inspirational stories and practical strategies to move beyond cancer. Connect with cancer survivors, share your experiences or join in with live fitness activities and Q&A sessions.

Is it free?

Yes, this project will be completely free! However there will be an opportunity, if you wish, for you to set up a Facebook or Just Giving fundraiser for your walking challenge to help us continue to run the programme and to give something back.

You can find more information on how to do this here: https://www.mission-remission.com/set-up-fundraiser

You can also join us and become a Mission Remission member and get your own Mission Remission branded T-shirt.

To become a member, just sign up via the Just Giving monthly donation page here.

And you can find our Facebook group here

Who will run the sessions?

Chelle has been a personal trainer since 2013. She is often referred to by GPs for exercise and has a lot of experience working with cancer survivors. As a cancer survivor herself, she understand the barriers people face when exercising post-cancer treatment first hand.
